Junior Classes (Te Purapura)
We have three reception classes at Kōwhai Specialist School catering for up to six students in each classroom.
Each class has one Teacher and at least one Teaching Assistant.
We aim to provide a warm caring environment for our children, some of whom have become used to a pre-school setting, and some for whom being away from home is a totally new experience. Many children come to us needing support with self- care routines and this is very much part of our programme.
In the Junior classes we have a full and varied timetable. As well as our core learning activities, we include swimming in our own heated therapeutic pool, horse riding at Riding for the Disabled, music with our visiting Music teacher and regular outings in the community.
Our Specialist Providers are with us every week and provide programmes and suggestions to support all our activities.
Base Seniors
Room 5 is our senior class at base school. We have one teacher and 2 wonderful teaching assistants. We are self sufficient with our own kitchen facilities and separate outdoor play area.
Our class vision is to create a safe and caring learning environment where students individual needs are recognised and catered for through varied and functional learning experiences.
We cater for a wide variety of abilities and all students have individuals programs based on their unique needs. Students are encouraged to reach their full potential and a major focus we have is on life skills and supporting our students to be as independent as they can.
The students love our weekly swimming in our heated therapeutic pool, visits to the central school gym and being out and about in the community.
We are strongly supported by the professional knowledge of our therapist team and well as having two music specialists that work with the group and with individual students.
